Plans for 2020

Welcome to a brand-new year! I knew what most of my plans and intentions for 2020 would be while we were barely in to the second half of 2019.

I’ll be making a YouTube video to compliment this one and, as I took all of the photos on my phone, you’ll have to forgive the social media-friendly portrait orientation!

Winter Wild Camping?

We’re officially in to November as I began to write this. October was a bit of a blur in my memory… The occasional dry day submerged beneath the rushing images of many-a downpour.

From here, it is a long way until we’re back in the seasons of T-shirt weather. I do struggle with the darkness, drop in temperature and reduced sunlight. I’d love to go away and spend a weekend camping but, for me personally, it isn’t the right time of year…

Instead, I’m thinking about the occasional wild camp as a way of getting out there and attempting to ’embrace’ the long winter nights! Continue reading “Winter Wild Camping?”

First Walk with the Montane Yupik 50

Seven-days before ahead of the start of my South Downs Way journey, I loaded up my new fifty litre rucksack and heading up in to the Mendip Hills for a day walk. This would be my first outing with the Montane Yupik 50. An opportunity to see it it really fits and how comfortable I would be, carrying my current load. Benuo Inflatable Camping Mat

I enjoy camping. But sleeping is something I struggle with, both at home and away. Under a tent, I’m often finding that physical discomfort is a concern for me and I’ll often wake up in some pain or struggle to relax in to a position from which I can drift off.

Very recently, I purchased an inflatable camping mat and I’d like to share my initial thoughts.

Packing for The Ridgeway: Days 2 and 3

Hopefully you’ve already seen that I’m now two-thirds of the way along with my walk of The Ridgeway National Trail. Days two and three were tackled with a considerably lighter pack-load, as I would be staying overnight at a youth hostel in between.

In this post, I’ll share some of the essentials (and non-essentials) I carried with me.

My Wash Bag and First Aid Kit

In response to a recent post where I laid out my (excessive) backpacking kit, a number of people, across various social media platforms, expressed an interest in knowing what I might have inside my wash bag and my first aid kit drybag (both of which were considerably weighty against other items in my arsenal).

I’m grateful for all of the suggestions and tips that people have provided. Now, I’m going to reveal why they weigh so much.
