Saturday 12th January 2019
A few years ago, I walked the entire length of the West Somerset Coast Path (which also forms a completed portion of the England Coast Path) with my friend Anna. I’d been meaning to return and revisit a couple of areas but was mainly put off by the inability to plot an appealing circular route that would avoid the many roads.
Well, tarmac or not, I was prepared to revisit this lesser-travelled stretch of coast on a particularly windy day, one weekend at the beginning of 2019.

Sunday 15th April 2018
This was the day immediately after my most recent walk along the Severn Way. While I’ve forgotten my precise reasons for heading out on a day bearing the threat of rain, I imagine I was most likely looking to make the most of a day that might otherwise have been spent indoors, ‘waiting’ for Monday morning to come and go.

One week earlier, I was exploring the coast path and countryside of Pembrokeshire.
In stark contrast to that, I decided to head south and for a partly-familiar walk in Somerset, following a small portion of the official England Coast Path, as opened in 2016.

Bonfire night! But, before all of that, I drove over towards Portishead for a fairly local walk with Brunel Walking Group.
I found it refreshing to be able to drive across North Somerset and avoid Bristol altogether, on this one. We would all meet and start close to Clapton-in-Gordano, with a number of us parking our cars within the darkness of the M5 flyover.

Walking the Brean Down Way; a combined cycle and walking route linking Brean with Weston-super-Mare, that opened in July 2017.
Sunday 3rd September 2017
Earlier this year, a combined footpath and cycle route, known as the Brean Down Way, was opened in North Somerset and now provides a link between the seaside towns of Brean and Weston-super-Mare.
At the time of writing, this is the most appropriate route for coastal walkers passing through Somerset. On this day, I drove down to Brean to explore it for myself.

A circular walk from Combwich in Somerset that heads out to Hinkley Point before walking back along the coastal path.
Saturday 26th August 2017
This was one of those occasions where I was looking to do a walk but not entirely certain of where to go and also reluctant to travel too far from home.
I decided upon a fifty-minute drive south to Combwich near Bridgwater. From there, I could revisit a section of coastal walking that I first completed with Anna in 2016. Then, there would be the eyesore.

I’d been wanting to revisit the northern end of the River Parrett, ever since walking it with Anna in 2016, as part of our effort to complete the unofficial Somerset Coast Path.
Back then, we took a mutual shortcut in the aim of saving time and making the stretch less mundane, as even the new England Coast Path requires you to walk along both sides of this wide river before reaching Steart and heading west past the Quantocks.
In this walk, I would fill in the missing miles. On my own, for now.
