Stanage Edge

Wednesday 24th July 2019

Following three days of walking in the Peak District, this was decided to be our communal ‘rest day’. Two of our party took this literally, while Jenny and I were keen to get another walk in. We each went our separate ways and, as she headed east to climb Win Hill, I would breach the outskirts of Sheffield to follow a route inspired by The Walking Englishman.

Hiking in the Dark Peak (Part 2)

Monday 14th August 2017

I’d reached Losehill Farm, around 300m above sea level and gasping for my breath.

There was still another 200m or less before I would reach the summit of Lose Hill. Beyond that, I’d be following a ridge.

Hiking in the Dark Peak (Part 1)

Part 1 of my first walk in the ‘Dark Peak’ portion of the Peak District. A major highlight of my long weekend away.

To be concluded in Part 2.

Monday 14th August 2017

This is yet another Peak District walk with the route taken from The Walking Englishman. I’d like to say that the entire walk resides within the Dark Peak portion of the National Park but, I’m not sure where it ends and the White Peak begins… Even Google can’t provide a consistent answer.

Regardless; a small portion of this walk passes through Edale, making it my first ever walk in Dark Peak of Derbyshire.

Lathkill Dale, Derbyshire (Part 2)

Sunday 13th August 2017

I’d reached Lathkill Dale; somewhere beyond the halfway point in my walk.

Lunchtime was looming and the river would act as my guide for the next couple of kilometres…

What could possibly go wrong?

Lathkill Dale, Derbyshire (Part 1)

Sunday 13th August 2017

My second walk in the Peak District for the year and another route taken from The Walking Englishman.

Two years previously, I’d not been able to do a second walk due to the state of the weather. Yet. here I was, with a very reasonable forecast for this day.

Exploring The Roaches (Part 2)

Saturday 12th August 2017

By the end of Part 1, I’d reached the trig point (505m) beyond Bearstone Rock. From here on, I was officially walking across an area known as The Roaches.

(Apparently, the name derives from the type of gritstone found here and nothing at all to do with the insect-like appearance from afar…).

The (Not So) Long Mynd

Monday 29th May 2017

Our weekend away in Snowdonia was drawing to a close, along with the end of May Bank Holiday weekend. A small number of group members were determined to tackle the three-and-a-half hour drive home ASAP. My suggestion, was to divide the journey with a walk along the way.

So, we crossed the border and arrived at Church Stretton in Shropshire; ninety-minutes down and now only two-hours from home. But first, eight-miles of hiking!
