It feels like only last week that I was writing about August, with thoughts of the summer waving goodbye for another year. October has arrived very suddenly. I’ve had quite a busy month, as you’ll see below.
Having completed the one-hundred mile South Downs Way National Trail before the end of the month, May was always going to be a high-scorer. It may even be a personal record-breaker.

By this time next week, I intend to be more than halfway along in my hundred-mile trek following the South Downs Way. I find it surreal and a little bit scary to think that, come this weekend, I won’t be home for several days… Each twenty-four hour period may prove to be a challenge; but also, somehow rewarding.
There is a temptation and desire within me (although not great in size) to just take the week off and do nothing… I often yearn for a break from the daily grind. But my plans are in place. I have committed to facing this long walk and my finalised plans differ slightly from my previous itinerary.
Seven-days before ahead of the start of my South Downs Way journey, I loaded up my new fifty litre rucksack and heading up in to the Mendip Hills for a day walk. This would be my first Black Mountains walk of the year, having previous done a shorter route in a similar area with my friend Dave, back in December.
Everything was planned for a great sixteen-miles in these brilliant mountains. My bag was packed. Lunch prepared. As I bent down to put my shoes on and, before I could even tie my laces, something ‘went’ in my lower back.
It’s almost one month to the day of which I aim to be starting my six-day trek along the South Downs Way National Trail. I’m looking forward to the experience, even though I’ve only very recently sat down to plan my daily routes and the itinerary, with regards to camping along the way.
