A Return to Dovedale

Monday 22nd July 2019

In preparation for this ‘Week in the Peaks’, I’d drawn up a private shortlist of walks I might be interested in leading with our small group. From memory, I believe there were nine entries. Some of which I’d walked alone within my two previous trips to Derbyshire.

An opportunity to revisit Dovedale was on the cards – quite literally, a sub-ten mile route was among the AA Walks route cards in our possession. I wasn’t leading this one but I believe we extended the length a bit.

Matlock Bath and the High Tor

Tuesday 15th August 2017

By this time, I’d already packed away my tent and had left Chelmorton with the knowledge that I would soon be on the long drive home and the inevitable return to w**k the following day.

In order to break up the long drive and make something of my morning, I’d decided to explore Matlock Bath. I had a free parking space in mind and and hoped the experience might be as pleasant as my brief trip to Bakewell in 2015.

Lathkill Dale, Derbyshire (Part 2)

Sunday 13th August 2017

I’d reached Lathkill Dale; somewhere beyond the halfway point in my walk.

My second walk in the Peak District for the year and another route taken from The Walking Englishman.

Two years previously, I’d not been able to do a second walk due to the state of the weather. Yet. here I was, with a very reasonable forecast for this day.

Exploring The Roaches (Part 2)

Saturday 12th August 2017

By the end of Part 1, I’d reached the trig point (505m) beyond Bearstone Rock. From here on, I was officially walking across an area known as The Roaches.

(Apparently, the name derives from the type of gritstone found here and nothing at all to do with the insect-like appearance from afar…).

Exploring The Roaches (Part 1)

Saturday 12th August 2017

After almost two-years, I was finally making my return to the Peak District. I’d even be staying at the same camp site and so, I knew much of what to expect.

On this Saturday morning, I’d decided to get a walk in first before continuing on to pitch my tent. I was destined for Gradbach in Staffordshire and confident I could complete the journey without using my SatNav…

Peak District Weekend – August 2017

I was hoping I would’ve been able to write something last week, about my intended trip to the Peak District, which ended forty-eight hours ago… But I’ve not been managing my spare time well enough, which inevitably resulted in late night and last-minute packing on no fewer than two evenings!

For the first time since September 2015, I made the long drive up to Derbyshire on Saturday morning. Here, I’ll be glancing over the highlights, with a detailed insight for each walk to follow in time.
