#walk1000miles: February 2019

February was a month that began with a sudden cold snap, carpeting much of the UK (including the often-untouched south-west) with several inches of snow. A short month on any calendar. I’m still surprised it has come and gone so quickly.

Snow in Wrington (02/02/2019)

Saturday 2nd February 2019

It was officially the weekend and the second day of my extended break from work. Many people had been out the previous day to sample the fresh and falling snow.

Again, I hesitated over whether not to go out again, as I’d seen enough snow and was planning to walk the next day… As cabin fever began to set in, I found myself climbing those hills from home again.

Snow in Wrington (01/02/2019)

Friday 1st February 2019

For the first time in 2019, snow fell across the south-west of England on the evening of Thursday 31st January. I drove through this in the early evening, before it had really begun to settle. Waking up the next morning, I soon received a text message to say that my employer would not be opening their doors for the day…

I find it hard to believe but, the Met Office are warning of freezing temperatures and possible snowfall over the coming Easter weekend… This would mean a third instance of snowfall for the southern half of the UK!

Bearing in mind that we hadn’t seen much more than a few flakes since 2013. During the return visit of the ‘Beast from the East’, I did manage a simple solo walk over to the neighbouring village of Churchill.

Butcombe Reccy

Saturday 24th February 2018

In less than three weeks time, I’ll be leading my next walk with the group.

This local outing was an effort to ‘reccy’ and finalise the route I had plotted and proposed for the occasion. I was actually leading another walk the very next day and you’ll be able to read my account of that experience, soon.

Snow 2018: Wrington to Goblin Combe

Saturday 3rd March 2018

This was only a fortnight ago and yet, here we are, bracing ourselves for ‘Mark II’ of the Beast from the East!

My second walk of the previous experience would again set off from my doorstep in Wrington. Although the roads had been cleared, I wanted to keep things very local.
